Man beaten to death in Faridpur on suspicion of theft

A man was beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Gerda village under Faridpur Sadar upazila around 3:00am today.

The victim was identified as Md Millat Chowdhury, 31, son of late Abdul Alim of Gerda village.

Parvej Mia, a member of Gerda Union Parishad, said Millat Chowdhury is known for his drug addiction and has a bad reputation in the area. He was caught and beaten up while he was trying to commit theft, and died on the spot.

CCTV cameras were installed around the house where Millat had gone to steal last night, and the footage was connected to the mobile phones of the people who live there. When the thief was spotted on the phone, the family chased and caught him. Later, around 50-60 locals gathered and beat him, he added.

Md Asadujjaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Faridpur Sadar Police Station, confirmed the man was beaten to death on suspicion of theft. Police arrived at the scene and recovered the body. The body was sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Millat Chowdhury has a total of three cases against him, including one under the Narcotics Act and two under the theft, added the OC.

As of 4:00pm, no complaint has been filed and no detentions have been made in connection to Millat's death, the police official confirmed.
