Public Works Department (PWD) Sports Club confirmed their promotion to Bangladesh's top-flight football for the first time in more than three decades following a 3-0 win over Little Friends Club in their Bangladesh Championship League fixture at the Bashundhara Kings Arena practice ground on Monday.

With 37 points from 15 matches, PWD sit top of the 11-team BCL table, three clear of second-placed Arambagh and 10 in front of third-place City Club.

With only three games remaining, PWD can't be overtaken by City Club, meaning they will be one of the two teams eligible for promotion.

The office team, who used to be a regular outfit in top-flight football in the 80s and early 90s, last played in top-flight football in 1994 in the then Dhaka Premier Division League where they were demoted to First Division at the end of that season.

PWD were allowed to ply in the BCL this season despite finishing only third in the Second Division League the previous season, thanks to the top two finishers not having professional club licencing. That good fortune, with effort from their team management and the players, have now paved the path for this old club to return to the top level.
