Kibria Killing

More time given for further probe

A Sylhet court has set yet another deadline for filing the report of further probe into the killing of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria and four others.
Md Momin Ullah, acting judge of Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal, yesterday extended the time to June 23 following a prayer by Special Public Prosecutor Kishore Kumar Kar.
The special PP stated in the court that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) needs more time to file the supplementary charge sheet.
The court sources said it is the 65th time filing of the report has been deferred.
On March 7, 2007, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Munshi Atiqur Rahman, the then investigation officer of the case, through a petition informed the tribunal about necessity of a further investigation.
After he went on retirement in August 2007, ASP Md Rafiqul Islam took over the investigation.
Contacted yesterday afternoon, Rafiqul Islam told this correspondent, the report was under scrutiny of senior officials. He could not say when it will be submitted.
The IO, however, said they found no basis of the allegations brought against 10 persons in the first charge sheet filed by Munshi Atiqur Rahman. He did not go into detail.
The investigation department recently prepared the supplementary charge sheet accusing 14 persons, including former state minister for home Luthfuzzaman Babar.
But the report could not be submitted in the face of strong opposition from Kibria's wife Asma Kibria. She alleged it does not contain the names of masterminds.
The IO was set to file it on May 25.
Awami League veteran Shah AMS Kibria was killed in a grenade attack on a rally in Habiganj on January 27, 2005, along with his nephew Shah Manjurul Huda, local AL leaders Abdur Rahim, Abul Hossain and Siddique Ali.
District AL Organising Secretary Abdul Majid Khan filed two cases -- one for murder and the other under Explosives Substances Act -- with Habiganj Police Station the next day.
On March 20, Munshi Atiqur Rahman filed the first charge sheet.
