72 arrested so far over Monday's vandalism; 10 cases filed

At least 72 individuals have been arrested so far on charges of vandalism in different districts during Monday's demonstrations in solidarity with the oppressed people of Gaza, Chief Advisor's press wing said in a Facebook post today.

Besides, 10 cases have been filed over the incidents, Chief Adviser's press wing mentioned in the post.

"Further investigations are underway, and additional cases are in the process of being filed against those responsible for these reprehensible acts," it added.

Police Headquarters also confirmed the arrests of 72 people in connection with the vandalism. Of them, 33 were arrested in Khulna, 19 in Sylhet, five in Chattogram, four each in Cox's Bazar, Gazipur and Narayanganj, and three in Cumilla.

Groups of rowdy people vandalised and looted shops, restaurants and shoe stores in Sylhet, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Khulna, Gazipur, and Bogura during the demonstrations.

2,900 sued in Khulna

Three separate cases have been filed with Sonadanga Model Police Station against 2,900 unidentified people last night in connection with the attacks, vandalism, and looting at the outlets of Bata, Domino's Pizza, and KFC in Khulna's Shibbari area, reports our Khulna correspondent. 

Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shofiqul Islam said that Bata manager of Shibbari showroom Touhidul Islam filed one of the cases accusing 1,200 to 1,300 unidentified individuals over the attack on his showroom.

In the case, the complaint mentioned that the store incurred losses amounting to Tk 95 lakh due to the looting and vandalism.

In another separate case, KFC manager Sujon Mondol accused 700–800 people of similar charges.

Another 700–800 were named in another case filed by Domino's Pizza manager Shamsul Alam with Sonadanga Police Station.

All three complainants said that their establishments suffered extensive vandalism, looting of property and cash, and damages worth several crores of taka.

Sub-Inspector Abdul Hai, the investigation officer of the cases, said CCTV footage from the Shibbari intersection and surrounding areas has been collected and is under analysis to identify those involved.

On Monday night, law enforcement conducted raids at various locations across the city and detained 31 individuals.

"They will be formally shown arrested in these cases later in the day," he said.

The Daily Star couldn't confirm whether the cases and number of arrests from the districts have included in the list of central CA office or the police headquarters.
