Police arrested a man for his alleged involvement in raping an eight-year-old schoolgirl in Begumganj upazila on Tuesday night. 

The arrestee, Abul Khayer, 45, a tailor, is a resident of Krishnarampur village under Rajganj union, police said.

Being informed, police in a quick move arrested Abul from Kalirhat Bazar around 11:30pm the same night.

Her family members came to know the matter after the girl returned home and fell sick, Officer in Charge (OC) of Begumganj Police Station Harun-ur-Rashed Chowdhury said.

The victim, a Class III student at a local primary school, is now undergoing treatment at Noakhali General Hospital, the OC said.

During primary interrogation, Abul confessed his involvement in raping the minor girl, he added.
