Youth honoured for selfless service

Chittagong District Administration yesterday honoured a 28-year-old for setting a unique example of humanity by selflessly serving unidentified patients at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) since 2013.

Deputy Commissioner Mesbah Uddin presented a crest and Tk 20,000 to Md Saiful Islam Nasar at his office, saying he would write to the health director for an identity card so that Saiful has unhindered access to the hospital.

Expressing gratitude, Saiful urged taking steps to ensure healthcare for unidentified patients at the government hospitals around the country, including forming special cells which would remain active round the clock.

The youth from Feni first came across the plight of unidentified patients at Feni Sadar Hospital and stated to frequent there. He could initially spend time with patients and provide old clothes.

Later, he took up a job in Chittagong city and started spending a substantial portion of his income for patients at CMCH after office hours as a shipping company's technical officer.

The Daily Star ran a report on him on September 12 with the headline “Giving love to the forgotten”.  

Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr Azizur Rahman Siddique, Income Tax Commissioner of Sylhet Syed Md Abu Daud and Bangladesh Medical Association Chittagong unit President Dr Mujibul Huq Khan were present yesterday.
