Death in Cop Custody

Sylhet court orders police inquiry

Sylhet's additional chief judicial magistrate yesterday ordered Shahporan Police Station's officer-in-charge to inquire into a case accusing five of the Detective Branch of Sylhet Metropolitan Police of torturing to death an arrestee.
Mokbul Ali, father of the deceased Abdul Khalique, 36, filed the case with the magistrate's court yesterday.
In it, he said DB assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) Jahangir Alam and Santosh arrested Khalique at a Medibag house in Sylhet city on February 19 around 9:00pm.
Within hours, Khalique was declared dead at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where the DB men took him in an unconscious state after torture, said Mokbul, adding that the deceased's family did not know that Khalique used to serve as a police source.
Denying the torture allegation, ASI Jahangir yesterday said Khalique was arrested with 10 Phensedyl bottles in his possession and died a normal death after falling sick.
Khalique was accused in seven cases under the narcotics act. He got release from jail on bail just two weeks before the arrest and got involved in drug peddling, he said.
