Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus today approved the draft of the Anti-Terrorism (Amendments) Ordinance 2025 in a special meeting of the advisory council at the state guest house Jamuna.

The proposed amendments include the power to ban the operations of an organisation or group and take measures to restrict the dissemination of terrorism-related content through online platforms and social media, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser's Press Wing.

The advisory council gave both policy and final approval to the ordinance in today's meeting, which was presided over by Yunus this morning.

According to the statement, the Anti-Terrorism Act, enacted in 2009, was designed to prevent certain terrorist activities, ensure effective punishment, and regulate related matters.

To achieve these objectives, the government may, based on reasonable grounds, list individuals or entities in a schedule or declare them as banned through a gazette notification.

However, the current version of the law lacks explicit provisions regarding the banning of an entity's activities.

"The necessity has arisen to clarify and incorporate such provisions in a timely and appropriate manner," the statement said.

The amendment is expected to be announced as an ordinance tomorrow.
