Torch procession at DU demanding justice for JCD leader Shammo
Leaders and activists of various political and cultural organisations at Dhaka University brought out a torch procession on the university's campus tonight, demanding justice for Shahriar Alam Shammo, a DU student and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader, who was killed near Suhrawardy Udyan late last night.
They also demanded the removal of DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan and its proctor Saifuddin Ahmed for failing to provide security to students.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. The procession, under the banner of "Students Against Terrorism", began around 8:20pm from the base of the Raju sculpture.
It marched through key campus points, including the central mosque, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Hallpara.
Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Ganatantrik Chhatra Jot, a coalition of left-leaning student organisations, and cultural organisations of Dhaka University took part in the procession.
The protesters later demonstrated in front of the residence of the VC of DU and left the area around 9:15pm.
Meanwhile, students and political activists at DU have announced a protest programme for tomorrow.
Jahidul Islam Riyad, a student of Dhaka University and the Organising Secretary of Biplobi Chhatra Moitree, said they will stage a demonstration at Aparajeyo Bangla around 4:00pm demanding the same issue.
Shammo, 25, was the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Ashraful Islam Rafi, a fellow student, said Shammo was riding his motorcycle near Suhrawardy Udyan when it collided with another bike. This led to an altercation and a scuffle. At one-point, unidentified individuals stabbed him in the right thigh before fleeing.
He was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
