Rape of July martyr's daughter: Accused arrested in Barishal

An accused in the rape of a July martyr's daughter in Patuakhali's Dumki upazila has been arrested, police confirmed.

The 17-year-old was detained by a team of the district Detective Branch around 5:00pm yesterday from Kashipur area under Barishal's Airport Police Station, said Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sazedul Islam Sajal.

He had been on the run since the incident. Police submitted a charge sheet against him and two others with a Patuakhali court on Thursday.

Even though the accused was not initially named as an accused, his involvement came to light during police investigation and confessional statements made under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure by the two other accused, said police.

He was later added to the list of suspects.

On March 18, the girl was on her way to her maternal grandparents' house after visiting her father's grave when she was raped, according to the case document.

She died by suicide on April 26 at a house in Dhaka.

The victim's father was shot by police on July 23 last year and succumbed to his injuries two days later.
