Listed criminal dies two days after Patenga beach shooting

Md Akbar, a listed criminal known as "Dhakaiya Akbar," died this morning, two days after he was shot by assailants at Patenga Sea Beach in Chattogram city.

Akbar, who suffered bullet wounds to his chest and other parts of his body, succumbed to his injuries around 8:00am while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Officer-in-Charge of Panchlaish Model Police Station Md Solaiman.

"The body has been kept at the CMCH morgue for autopsy," the OC said.

The shooting occurred on Friday night in the Patenga beach area of Chattogram city, which was crowded with tourists at the time.

According to police, a group of assailants opened fire targeting Akbar. Two others, including a child, were also injured in the incident.

He was accused in at least 10 criminal cases on various charges, including murder, arms possession, and extortion.

The OC said the attack may be linked to Akbar's longstanding feud with another top criminal, Sazzad Hossain, alias "Choto Sazzad", from the Bayezid Bostami area. The rivalry escalated in recent months through a series of provocative Facebook videos.

Akbar had repeatedly posted videos containing abusive remarks about Sazzad and his wife, Tamanna Sharmin. In retaliation, Tamanna shared videos online threatening to take revenge. Both Sazzad and Tamanna are currently in jail.

Police records show that Akbar was last arrested in December 2023 in Lakshmipur with two firearms.
