Salman Rahman freed on bail

Industrialist and Vice Chairman of Beximco Group Salman F Rahman was released from Kashimpur Central Jail yesterday on a High Court (HC) bail.
Earlier, the HC asked the government through the attorney general to release Salman from jail custody within an hour following a prayer by Salman's counsel barrister Rafique-ul Huq.
Salman, arrested on February 4, last year during the interim government's crackdown on crime and corruption, was released from the prison at about 12:20pm.
He was shown arrested in at least 11 cases. Salman, however, secured bail from the courts including the HC in all the cases filed against him. On August 20, the HC granted Salman bail in the last case filed against him for taking loan from IFIC bank through forgery.
Rafique-ul Huq yesterday morning told the HC bench of Justice Sharif Uddin Chklader and Justice Md Emdadul Haque Azad that the government was delaying the release of his client despite receiving relevant papers regarding the court orders.
He wished to file a contempt petition with the court against the government for not releasing his client.
The HC bench then called attorney general Salahuddin Ahmed in the court and directed him to ask the authorities concerned to free Salman within an hour.
The attorney general told the court that Salman's release was under process.
Rafique-ul Huq said the government might file appeals with the Supreme Court (SC) against the HC's bail orders to prevent his client's release.
The court asked the attorney general to produce Salman before the court by 2:00pm yesterday. The court said otherwise it would summon the home secretary, IGP and other officials concerned and charge them with violating court orders.
After Salman was freed, Rafique-ul Huq informed the court of his client's release.
