Awami League (AL) Presidium member Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said the whole nation now wants to return democracy as early as possible.
The people will free from the present sufferings caused mainly by high prices of essentials if power is handed over to an elected public representatives, he said.
"We hope that the parliament election will hold by the end of 2008," he said.
He was addressing a meeting organised in observance of 3rd death anniversary of AL Presidium member Abdul Mannan.
Abdul Mannan Smrity Parishad organised the meeting on Tangail Central Shaheed Minar premises in the town.
Amir Hossain Amu also said Abdul Mannan was one of the main organisers of the Liberation War and always tried to do good to people.
With former principal Shamsul Huda in the chair, the meeting was addressed by, among others, Tangail district AL president Shamsur Rahman Khan Shajahan, secretary Fazlur Rahman Faruque, Tangail Chambers of Commerce secretary Alamgir Khan Menu, principal Nazim Uddin and acting chairman of Tangail municipality Zafar Ahmed.
Earlier, Amir Hossain Amu offered fateha at the grave of Abdul Mannan at College Para in the town.
Veteran politician Abdul Mannan died on April 4, 2005.
