Former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib and nine others were charge-sheeted yesterday in party leader A B M Altaf Hossain murder case.
The chief judicial magistrate's court in Satkhira accepted the charge sheet after rejecting a naraji petition by lawyer of the accused.
Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Sukha Ranjan Samaddar of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had submitted charge sheet to the court on January 12 after over four years of the incident.
Tala upazila BNP president A B M Altaf Hossain was killed on May 4, 2004 at Patkelghata Bazaar in a bomb attack. Another BNP activistHabibur Rahmanwas killed in the attack.
Babib is absconding. Only one of the 10 accusedProkash Sarkeris in jail while four others are on bail.
They are Badruzzaman, Mostafa alias Montu, Abu Hena Alam and Debendra Nath Biswas.
Judge S M Nasim Reja of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's court accepted the charge sheet and issued warrant of arrest against the absconding accused including former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib.
During hearing, the court asked the complainant's counsel to say whether the complainant was present in court or not. But, the counsel remained mum and sought time, court sources said.
Then the court accepted the charge sheet and issued arrest warrant against the absconding accused.
They are former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib, Kumira Union Parishad (UP) chairman and Tala upazila Krishak Dal president Golam Mostafa, Tala upazila Juba Dal president Hafizul Islam, former Tala upazila BNP joint secretary Rasheduzzaman Raju, Shib Pada Sarkar, Ahmmad Ali, Ashraful Haque, Shahidul Islam, Khalilnagar UP chairman and Tala upazila Workers' Party secretary Pranab Ghosh Bablu and Tushar Kumar Pal of Tegharia village.
The victim's mother Mariam Begum and wife Rehena Khanam at a press conference earlier alleged that ABM Altaf Hossain was killed because of internal conflict in party and former BNP lawmaker Habib was trying to save the killers.
Habib was elected lawmaker from Satkhira-1 (Tala-Kalaroa) constituency as a candidate of four-party alliance in 2001.
Habib also faces same other cases for his alleged involvement in extortion and corruption.
