Haji Selim cleared of 105 cases

Govt considers them 'politically motivated'

The government has withdrawn 105 criminal cases against former Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Selim considering those "politically motivated" and meant for "harassment".
The cases pending with different courts in the capital were withdrawn between July 2009 and August this year, court sources said.
Selim, who faced 120 criminal cases, had earlier filed one petition each for withdrawal of the cases. This was the highest number of such applications filed with the home ministry by an accused.
His counsel Pran Nath told The Daily Star that another 17 cases were disposed of through "mutual understanding" between his client and the complainants.
The charges against the former legislator from the capital's Lalbagh constituency include murder, attempt to murder, extortion, theft, holding unlawful assembly and obstructing law enforcers from discharging duties.
The cases were filed with different police stations in the city during the rule of BNP-led four-party alliance, and the last caretaker government.
Meanwhile, former BNP lawmaker from Lalbagh constituency Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu was acquitted in 76 lawsuits when his party was in power, said sources at the metropolitan public prosecutor's office.
Selim, joint general secretary of Dhaka city unit of AL, was sent to jail on May 27 in 2009 on his surrender to a Dhaka court in a corruption case. He was tried in absentia and sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment in the case but was released on bail later.
Of the cases against Selim, three were filed for murder, 17 for theft, 25 for extortion, 16 for attempt to murder, 28 for holding unlawful assembly and damaging vehicles, nine for obstructing the work of police and seven for keeping illegal arms.
Earlier, the government had withdrawn cases filed against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a number of AL leaders and activists considering those politically motivated.
But it is yet to withdraw any case filed against Leader of the Opposition and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her family members.
They had earlier submitted petitions for withdrawal of 20 cases.
