Residents stand close to the crumbling riverbank next to the Char Dakatia Government Primary School in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur. Severe and unexpected erosion has devastated three upazilas in the district -- Dewanganj, Islampur, and Madarganj -- with hundreds of homes and vast farmland swallowed by the Jamuna.
