On the 16th of December 1971 the All India radio announced, "Dhaka is now the free capital of a free country. The instrument of surrender was held in Dhaka at 5:01 PM by Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi on behalf of Pakistani Eastern Command. Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora GOC in command of the the Indian and Bangladeshi forces in the Eastern theatre accepted the surrender."
