Baishakh at a Glance

Last Friday the country burst into celebration to mark the arrival of a new Bangla Year. City dwellers in traditional red and white garb hit the streets in their thousands; it was time to celebrate Bangalinesss. Satellite-TV stricken youths, too, sang and danced with elders in a country that many fear is gradually losing its cultural identity. Every year, Pahela Baishakh comes to remind us of what we are and where we actually belong.
