Jessore outlaw killed in gunfight with rivals

An activist of outlawed Biplobi Communist Party was killed in a gunfight between two rival groups in Abhoynagar upazila of Jessore early today.
The deceased was identified as Siraj Akonji, 40, son of Afsar Akonji of Subrara village in the upazila.
A team of police raided the village around 12:15am after receiving information that a gun battle was taking place between two groups of outlawed party, said Khabir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Abhoynagar Police Station.
Sensing presence of the police, members of both the groups managed to flee the scene.
Later, the law enforcers found the bullet-hit body of Siraj lying on the ground, the OC said.
The body, which bore several bullet marks, was sent to Jessore Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police also recovered a firearm and four bullet shells from the spot.
Siraj was accused in at least 10 cases, including murder, filed with different police stations.
The gunfight might have occurred following an internal conflict, the OC added.
