Lucasfilm has officially announced "Star Wars: Starfighter", a new chapter in the iconic franchise, with Ryan Gosling leading the cast and Shawn Levy directing. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on May 28, 2027, with production set to begin this Fall.

The announcement was made during Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, where Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni confirmed the project. Gosling and Levy appeared at the event to tease the film, with Gosling wearing a cap that read, "Never tell me the odds."

"Being here reminds us how much these stories mean to the fans," Gosling said. "The force is the fans and may the fans be with us." Levy added, "We've spent our lives in the audience. We know what this franchise means."

"Starfighter" will take place five years after the events of "The Rise of Skywalker" and will feature a completely new set of characters within the "Star Wars" universe. The script is written by Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on "The Adam Project".

This marks Levy's next directorial venture following Marvel's blockbuster "Deadpool & Wolverine", which earned over $1.3 billion globally. "Starfighter" will follow "The Mandalorian & Grogu", which is set for a May 22, 2026 release and marks the first "Star Wars" theatrical film since 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker".
