Sony TV bids farewell to ‘CID’s’ ACP Pradyuman, fans react strongly

Sony TV confirmed ACP Pradyuman's death in "CID" through a social media post yesterday. For those who may not know, ACP Pradyuman has been the central character of "CID", one of the longest-running and most popular Indian crime series since it first aired in 1998.
In the most recent episode, the seasoned officer was shown dying in an explosion, leading to rumours that actor Shivaji Satam might have wanted to leave the role.
These speculations were confirmed by Sony TV in their social media announcement last night, sparking strong reactions from fans.
On Instagram, Sony TV posted a tribute image of ACP Pradyuman, accompanied by the message, "In the loving memory of ACP Pradyuman… A loss that will never be forgotten." The graphic also displayed the text: "End of an era. ACP Pradyuman (1998-2025)."
This sparked a flood of comments from frustrated fans, many of whom believed that the character's exit marked the end of the show itself.
One fan expressed their frustration, saying, "What is this???? Do we really need this post? Are you seriously ending this character, the era of 'CID', which we all hold dear, along with the perfect trio? We were hoping for a plot twist, and instead, you do this to our beloved character, our iconic ACP sir. I can't accept it... I absolutely don't like this.
"This post has truly broken our hearts." Another fan commented, "This isn't RIP to ACP Pradyuman. It's RIP to 'CID' and RIP to Sony TV. With this one thoughtless decision, you didn't just end a character, you buried a legacy."
Many fans expressed anger over how the character's death was portrayed on the show. One fan wrote, "Even if Shivaji sir wanted to leave, you still had a choice. You could have given him the farewell he deserved. You could have shown ACP Pradyuman finally capturing Barboza, delivering justice one last time, and then retiring with honour, pride, and dignity."
In the latest episode of "CID", the team attempts to apprehend the notorious criminal Barboza (Tigmanshu Dhulia), who traps ACP Pradyuman in his scheme and appears to kill him in an explosion. However, the death was not explicitly shown on screen, sparking speculation that the character might make a return.
Shivaji Satam responded to the reports about his character's death in an interview with the Bombay Times. The actor stated, "I have no idea about this. I've taken a break for a while, and the producers know what's next for the show. I've learned to take everything in stride, and if my storyline is over, I'm fine with it. However, I haven't been informed if my track has ended. As of now, I'm not shooting for the show."
"CID", created by BP Singh and produced by Singh and Pradeep Uppoor, has been airing on Sony TV since 1998. The police procedural has aired nearly 1600 episodes, becoming one of the most beloved Indian TV shows.
