5 shot dead during clashes in Brahmanbaria

Four people were killed as Hefajat-e-Islam activists clashed with police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Cumilla-Sylhet highway in Sadar Upazila of Brahmanbaria this afternoon.
Besides, a madrasa student was killed in a clash between a group of madarasa students and local Awami League-Chhatra League men in Kandipara area in the district town.
Abdul Momin Fuad, a member of Brahmanbaria district unit of Hefajat-e-Islam, claimed five of their supporters were shot dead.
"Of them, four, who took part in the procession brought out by Hefajat, were killed as police-BGB members opened fire at a procession of Hefajat-e-Islam in Brahmanbaria this afternoon," he said.
"Besides, a madrasa student was shot dead when Awami League and Chattra league men attacked on a madrasa," Fuad claimed at a press briefing in front of Brahmanbaria General Hospital.
Dr Rana Nurus Shams, resident medical officer at Brahmanbaria General Hospital said bodies of five people were kept at the hospital morgue.
Witnesses said the Hefajat men brought out a procession from Budhal union of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila this afternoon.
As the procession reached Nandanpur area on Cumilla-Sylhet highway, the Hefajat men locked into a clash with police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent quoting witnesses.
At one stage of the clash, the law enforcers opened fire, leaving at least 20 people injured, witnesses said.
Four of the injured were taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital with bullet wounds where doctors declared them dead, locals said.
The deceased were identified as Jor Alam (28), Sujon Miah (22), Badal Miah (28) and Kawser (22).
Earlier, a group of leaders and activists of district Awami League and Chhatra league brought out a procession in Kandipara of the town around 5:20pm protesting yesterday's rampage and arson by Qawmi madrasa students in the district.
A clash took place there when BCL men from the procession attacked Jamia Islamia Eunusia Madrasa in Kandipara area.
A chase and counter-chase took place between the Qawmi madrasa students and AL and BCL men when several AL activists chased some students of the madrasa, said witnesses.
Nearly 50 crude bombs were exploded during the clash, added the witnesses.
Hefajat leader Abdul Momin Fuad said a student named Jubayer, 12, suffered bullet injures during the clash. He was taken to the district general hospital where doctors declared dead.
However, police and BGB were yet to comment on the incidents.
Meanwhile, 15 policemen were injured as a group of Hefajat-e-Islam activists from a procession attacked a police camp in Sarail upazila of the district.
Kabir Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Sarail Police Station, told our correspondent that they attacked the policemen while they were passing the police camp with a procession.
"10 policemen of Sarail Police camp and five members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn)-12 were injured in the attack," he said.
Police brought the situation under control firing 40 rounds of rubber bullets and 15 rounds of tear shells, said the inspector.
