Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid, a former social welfare minister, died at a hospital in Dhaka today at the age of 82.

An Ekushey Award laureate, Shahid was suffering from many diseases including kidney ailment for long.

He was undergoing treatment at Square Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock at the death of the elderly politician and former minister.

In a message of condolence, the prime minister recalled his contribution to politics, saying the elderly lawmaker was very popular among tea garden workers.

She also recalled his role in organising the Liberation War and said the death of the dedicated and patriotic leader is a great loss for the party and the nation.

The prime minister prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to his bereaved family members.
