Gold hits record-high of Tk 1.56 lakh

Jewellers have increased the price of 22-carat gold to a record Tk 156,099 per bhori (11.664 grammes), marking the highest price ever recorded in the country's history.
The Bangladesh Jewellers' Association's Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring made this decision during a meeting today, attributing the rise to an increase in pure gold prices, as stated in a press release.
Previously, 22-carat gold ornaments were priced at Tk 154,944 per bhori (11.664 grammes), which was the previous all-time high in the country.
Gold prices in Bangladesh have been steadily climbing for over a year, driven by global market trends and fluctuations in domestic supply.
In July 2023, gold surpassed the Tk 100,000 threshold for the first time.
The nation requires between 20 and 40 tonnes of gold annually, with approximately 80 per cent of the demand being met through smuggling.
