Nasirnagar Attacks: PM angry over AL MP's role

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed anger over the role of Brahmanbaria district Awami League President RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury in the Nasirnagar incident.

“I won't keep him in any committee,” sources quoted Hasina as saying. She was speaking at the adjourned joint meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee and Advisory Council at the Gono Bhaban.

The lawmaker from Brahmanbaria-3 is also a member of the AL central committee.

Mobs, including religious zealots and local goons, vandalised and looted over 100 houses of Hindus and temples in Nasirnagar upazila headquarters and Haripur union during the three-hour mayhem on October 30.

Hasina said BNP-Jamaat leaders would have to face trial for killing people through arson attacks, trying to resist the last general election, getting involved in corruption and pampering war criminals.

“They must face trial on the soil of this country,” she said at the meeting, reports UNB.

About the allegation of BNP high-ups that the government filed false cases against them, Hasina said not a single false case was filed against them. “These cases will continue in court.”

“They killed hundreds of innocent people, including a presiding officer and an engineer, through arson attacks, created an anarchic situation across the country in the name of resisting elections, and vandalised schools. The trial of those who were involved in such killings must take place on Bangladesh's soil,” she said.

Hasina also said those who made war criminals ministers and MPs, gave them the national flag earned in exchange for blood of millions and gave them scope for doing politics must face trial one day.

Our correspondent added that the meeting distributed the responsibilities of party joint and organising secretaries.

It was the party's first joint meeting after the 20th triennial council held on October 22 and 23.

According to the decision taken in the meeting, Joint Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif will look after the party's organisational activities in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, Dipu Moni in Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions, Jahangir Kabir Nanak in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and Abdur Rahman in Barisal and Khulna divisions.
