A prominent street in the heart of the Indian capital today was named after Bangladesh's founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The decision to rename the Park Street, stretching from Shankar Road-Mandir Marg traffic roundabout to Mother Teresa Crescent in front of state-owned Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, was taken by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) a day before Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrives in New Delhi on a four-day state visit, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

NDMC Vice Chairman Karan Singh Tanwar said, "The task of changing the sign boards will be carried out tonight to ensure that it is completed before the Bangladesh PM's arrival tomorrow."

NDMC took the decision by a motion through a circular. The road named after Bangabandhu measures a little more than half of a kilometre.

"It has been decided to rename Park Street after founder of Bangladesh -- Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman-- ahead of Sheikh Hasina's visit. This is like a friendly gesture as India shares cordial relations with Bangladesh," a senior NDMC official said.

"The decision arrived by a motion through a circular as a Council meeting could not be convened for the purpose due to paucity of time and with the model code of conduct being in place because of coming civic body polls in Delhi," he added.

According to NDMC officials, while 12 of the council members, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, agreed to the proposal, one member of his Aam Aadmi Party from Delhi Cantonment Surinder Singh refused to give his consent.
