Regretful, shameful: foreign minister on MP Shahid’s detention in Kuwait

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen today said it is a matter of regret and shame that a Bangladeshi lawmaker has been detained in a foreign country.
"It's a matter of regret and shame for us that an MP has been arrested in a foreign land," he told The Daily Star today as he confirmed that Kuwait's CID detained independent lawmaker from Laxmipur-2 Mohammad Shahid Islam.
He was detained on Saturday night on allegations of human trafficking and money laundering, the minister said, referring to his communication with Bangladesh Ambassador to Kuwait SM Abul Kalam.
Shahid Islam, who went to Kuwait on February 16 this year, was detained from Mushrif residential area of Kuwait City.
The detention of the lawmaker came over a week after the killing of 26 Bangladeshis by human traffickers in Libya on their way from Benghazi to Tripoli -- to be sent to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. The incident also left 11 Bangladeshis injured.
"It's really sad that the MP is detained when the whole world is talking boldly against human trafficking," Foreign Minister Momen said.
He said Shahid Islam has a big business venture in Kuwait where he is the managing director or CEO and a Kuwaiti national is a chairperson.
"The Kuwaiti partner of his business is trying to help him with bail," Momen said.
Asked what actions the government will take against the MP accused of heinous crimes, the minister said, "We are investigating. We will take appropriate actions after investigation."
