The Tiger of Bengal

Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq is one of the most popular Bengali leaders and one of the forefathers of independent Bangladesh. His courageous leadership protected the rights of Bengali peasants and the commoners. We remember the contributions of this great leader on his 52nd death anniversary.
Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq was born in 1873 in Jhalokathi district of Barisal division
He was the second Muslim in the Indian subcontinent to obtain a law degree
Huq formed Krishak Praja Party (KPP) in 1936
He led the KPP to become the Premier of Bengal after the election of 1937
In 1947,he joined the League campaign to include Calcutta in Pakistan
Later on he accused Jinnah of not working hard enough for the cause
He became Chief Minister of Bengal in 1952
In 1955, he was Home Minister of Pakistan. And, from 1956 to 1958, Governor of East Pakistan

Huq played a crucial role in drafting and presenting the Lahore Resolution upon which Pakistan was created
For his courageous move with the Lahore Resolution he was given the title Sher E Bangla (The Tiger of Bengal)
Huq supported the Bengali Language Movement of 1952
It was his initiative to establish the landmark Bangla Academy in Dhaka in 1954
As A K Fazlul Huq was vocal to protect the rights of Bengalis, he was dismissed from public office on charges of inciting secession
He was later banned from politics by the military junta of Ayub Khan
He established many educational institutions in Bangladesh
He contributed a lot for the development of Dhaka University
After a brief illness, Fazlul Huq died in Dhaka in 1962 and was buried at a mausoleum at the Suhrawardy Udyan in Shahbag, Dhaka
