The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou (Sakurasou No Pet Na Kanojo) is a Japanese light novel series written by Hajime Kamoshida. In late 2012 it was picked up to be made into a 24 episode anime. The anime falls into the genres of simple slice of life, romance, drama and comedy.

The plot follows the protagonist Sorata Kanda, who is forced to shift from a normal dorm to an eccentric dorm called Sakurasou, filled with delinquents, so that he can keep his pet cat. The very unconventional personalities of his dorm roommates result in Sorato's unwillingness to live there. However, when a girl named Mashiro Shiina moves into Sakurasou – a girl who has an extreme lack of common sense and living ability - Sorata is forced to "adopt" Mashiro and help her out with the everyday tasks of life. Gradually, the dorm begins to shift into a better light for Sorato when more residents begin to move in.

The anime is visually pleasing – with the majority of the animation and key frames hand-drawn and with few CGI elements. The character expressions go well with each character and the comedic timing is well done. Though the story might seem slow initially, after the first four episodes it begins to pick up is its pace as the plot starts to focus on all the characters.

More than anything, Sakurasou No Pet Na Kanojo is a story about the bond made between friends and all the wild times and the real and unexpected emotions that come with them. The show serves as a simple but great watch and has its own morals to share at the end. Thus many whom I know personally have proudly claimed Sakurasou No Pet Na Kanojo to be the best anime of 2013.
