Global smartphone shipments rose modestly by 1.5 percent year-over-year (YoY) in the first quarter of 2025, reaching 304.9 million units, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker published on April 14.

Samsung has reclaimed the top position in global smartphone shipments during this period, surpassing Apple. The South Korean manufacturer recorded 60.6 million units shipped, securing a 19.9 percent share of the global market, according to IDC data.

This performance was underpinned by the strong demand for its latest flagship, the Galaxy S25, and mid-range Galaxy A series devices, particularly the Galaxy A36 and A56, which have integrated artificial intelligence (AI) features at accessible price points, according to Samsung Bangladesh.

Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo rounded out the top five vendors for the quarter following Samsung.

Apple followed closely behind with 57.9 million units shipped, capturing 19 percent of the global market. Xiaomi secured third place with 41.8 million units shipped and a 13.7 percent market share. Oppo and Vivo rounded out the top five, shipping 23.5 million and 22.7 million units respectively, with market shares of 7.7 percent and 7.4 percent.

The growth comes despite continued macroeconomic pressures and supply chain challenges affecting the technology sector worldwide amid ongoing US-China trade tension.

In a statement Ryan Reith, group vice president, worldwide device trackers, IDC, said, "Right now, the focus for U.S. smartphone brands should be taking advantage of the exemption by building and shipping as much as possible. The other side of this equation is the possibility that economic uncertainty may dampen consumer demand in the coming months."

In a statement, Anthony Scarsella, research director for Client Devices, IDC, said, "The growth in 1Q25 was fueled by rising consumer interest in the latest models from top manufacturers, along with a sense of urgency to buy before potential price increases."

"Additionally, the recently announced 90-day pause on smartphone tariffs could further enhance sales in Q2, as consumers might seize the opportunity to purchase before the possible reintroduction of tariffs that could drive prices up," Scarsella added.

IDC's Tracker products compile data from over 100 countries to provide detailed insights into market size, vendor performance, and future trends across various technology markets, as per IDC.
