Brazil’s numbers against Argentina worse than 7-1 humiliation

Brazil were humiliated 4-1 by bitter rivals Argentina in South American World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday as the pressure mounted on manager Dorival Jr after his side were comprehensively outplayed and fortunate not to lose by more.

After edging Colombia 2-1 at home on Thursday, Brazil came crashing back to earth against the world champions.

A stark contrast in match stats has popped up in the aftermath of the thrashing for Brazil as despite conceding three goals fewer against Argentina, the team's performance numbers were poorer than their 7-1 humiliation against hosts Germany in the 2014 World Cup.

The 2014 contest saw Brazil attempt 18 shots compared to Germany's 14. In Tuesday's duel, Dorival's side could only manage three versus Argentina's 13. The Selecao were also down in possession. In the World Cup, they had 47% of the ball, while in the qualifier, they had 46%. In terms of fouls committed, Brazil registered 17 infractions on Tuesday, with five players ending up in the book, whereas, eleven years ago, they committed 11 fouls and received just one warning.

Argentina, who have not lost to Brazil in six years, handed the Selecao their biggest defeat in World Cup Qualifiers and top the South American standings with 31 points from 14 matches.

Brazil's disastrous night at the Monumental Stadium also has historical significance in the feisty South American classic. It marked the first time the Selecao had lost to the Albiceleste by a three-goal margin in 61 years. Since then, there have been 62 meetings between the teams.
