Think positive: How long till Tigers’ 100 Test wins?

Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh succumbing to their 100th Test defeat with a 10-wicket loss against West Indies on Monday was the piece of news that apparently garnered the most attention of the fans, mostly because it provided an opportunity to indulge in jibes over social media at the expense of Bangladesh cricket.

But at a time when people need more cohorts than adversaries, a more optimistic point of view is needed to see this fact. How about, instead of obsessing over the 100 Test defeats and the fact that Bangladesh beat every other Test-playing nation by a mile to reach this feat, we take a while to see when the Tigers will reach 100 Test wins?

As things stand, Bangladesh have won 16 of the 134 Tests played so far. To complete a century of Test wins, Bangladesh require 84 more wins. Given that Bangladesh took 22 years to win 16 Tests, it would require the Tigers 115.5 years to win the remaining 84 Tests to reach 100 wins in Tests.

Now, instead of years, let's consider the number of matches required by Bangladesh to get to the three-figure mark for Test wins. Going by this rate, it takes Bangladesh 8.375 (dividing 134, total Tests played, by 16, total wins) Tests to win one game. So to win the remaining 84 matches, Bangladesh need to play (8.375 multiplied by 84) 703.5 more matches to reach 100 Test wins. As Bangladesh play about six Tests per year, they would need to play 117.25 more years to reach the feat, about two more years than what it was when we simply considered years required for one win.

But wait, weren't we looking for more of an optimistic way of looking at it? Let's try it by setting a different parameter. We know that Bangladesh have progressed a lot as a team in recent times. Keeping in mind that Bangladesh had lost 50 Tests and won only one in their first 57 outings in the format, it can certainly be said that significant progress was made during the course of next 50 defeats.

So, let's take in consideration the statistics of the last five years as the golden generation of Bangladesh cricket presided over this period. In the last five years, it took Bangladesh 4.857 matches to win one game. So to win the remaining 84, Bangladesh would need to play 408 more Tests. Now, given that Bangladesh played 6.8 matches (let's be generous and round it up to 7) per year in the last five years, it would take Bangladesh more 58.28 years to complete 100 Test wins. Phew, we managed to bring it down to this century as the recent trend suggests that the Tigers would reach the landmark in the year 2080.

All these calculations were made by a very positive 26-year-old reporter and an ardent Bangladesh fan, who at this stage of his computations, realised that the way the Tigers' fragile top-order has made his heartbeat fluctuate in recent times, it probably won't be possible for him to see Bangladesh reach the feat. The sadder part is that the nearest date for Bangladesh achieving the feat is two more generations away -- meaning the wards of current cricketers of Bangladesh will turn grandparents before the team get to 100 Test wins even at the best possible scenario.

The whole point of this article was to ponder on ways to take positives from the Tigers' 100 defeats. It, however, only intensified the woes because as things stand, it is very difficult to take positives from the Tigers' dire state in Tests.

Wait. We can always hope for miracles, right? Yes, a miracle will definitely turn things around!
