Taijul hits back at critics with fifer on Day 1 of Chattogram Test

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam backed his pedigree and hit back at critics after he picked a 16th five-wicket haul on Day 1 of the second Test of the two-match series against Zimbabwe in Chattogram on Monday.
After an underwhelming performance in Bangladesh's three-wicket defeat in the first Test in Sylhet where Taijul managed just two wickets, the joint-lowest tally for a spinner in that match alongside Zimbabwe's Wessly Madhevere, the 33-year-old faced criticism on social media for failing to deliver in favourable home conditions.
However, Taijul bounced back with a fifer, helping to reduce Zimbabwe to 227- 9 at Stumps after the visitors opted to bat first. Playing in his 53rd Test, the experienced spinner made his feelings clear when asked about the backlash he faced after the first Test.
"I think those who criticise a player who has played so many matches after watching just one match don't understand the game," Taijul told reporters.
While standing firm against the criticism, Taijul also acknowledged that his showing in Sylhet had fallen below expectations.
"There is a matter of being satisfied. It's not a good thing, the way I bowled in Sylhet, considering that I'm a player who has played 50 Tests. It feels good to be able to bounce back after that," he added.
