Batty says not everything is 'off the table' on Shakib question

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty said there was no intention to have Shakib Al Hasan play for the team this year but did not completely rule out a move.

Shakib had been working at Surrey for two weeks with Md Siraj Ullah Khadem and Surrey head coach Batty to correct his action. With Shakib also using Surrey facilities during his work with the coaches, there had been suggestions that Shakib may play for Surrey again this season. The Bangladesh ace all-rounder had picked up nine wickets against Somerset in the county game from September 9 to 12 and it was the very game where his action was called.

Shakib's action was cleared on Thursday and he will be allowed to bowl internationally as well as in other domestic competitions.

"It was as simple as a phone call from Shakib to myself. He wanted to do some work to rectify his action. He was found to have an action that was not appropriate when he was playing for us. There was no doubt in my mind that we were going to help him, that I was going to help him," Batty said in a press conference on Friday when a British Bangladeshi journalist Towhid Qureshi asked the coach about his work with Shakib.

"That's the simple fact of it, he came here to do some work. He is now being covered off, that's our duty to any player. The fact that Shakib is a very high-profile player…arguably the best all-rounder in international cricket for a long time, is irrelevant. He is a human being who was playing for us and our duty was to look after him. Thank goodness he has been cleared," Batty added.

While Batty said there was no intention, he also did not deny that there was no chance for Shakib to play for Surrey this season.

"I don't think we have intention at the moment for him to play for Surrey this year. It would be wrong of anybody to say that everything is off the table because we don't know what circumstance arises. It was as simple as two blokes trying to get another bloke where he wanted to be," Batty concluded.
