Taskin, Mahmudullah record stand helps Tigers post a mammoth total

A record ninth-wicket stand between Mahmudullah Riyad and Taskin Ahmed helped Bangladesh stage a remarkable comeback and pile up a mammoth total of 468 at Tea on the second day of their one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare today.

Having resumed the day on 294 for eight, Bangladesh crossed the 450-run mark, a feat that seemed unlikely after the top order collapsed miserably on the opening day of the game.

The duo of Mahmudullah and Taskin stitched together a 191-run ninth-wicket stand, which is now the second-highest partnership for that wicket in Tests. They fell just four short of the 23-year-old world record of 195-run ninth-wicket stand between South Africa's Mark Boucher and Pat Symcox during a Test against Pakistan in 1998.

However, their mammoth stand is the highest ninth-wicket stand for Bangladesh in Tests, surpassing the previous best of 184-run stand between Mahmudullah and Abul Hasan against West Indies in Khulna in 2012.

Coming in at number 10, Taskin played an inspiring 75-run knock that included shots taken right out of the batting textbook. Taskin, who came out to bat late on the opening day, smashed a total of 11 boundaries before his remarkable innings came to an end when he missed the ball and was bowled while trying to hit Milton Shumba for a six.

Taskin might have missed out on picking up his maiden Test ton, but Mahmudullah silenced his critics on his return to Test cricket following a 17-month forced exile from the format as the right-hander went on to smash his career-best Test score. He remained unbeaten on 150 off 278 deliveries.

Bangladesh's innings came to an end soon after the record stand between Taskin and Mahmudullah was broken. The number 11 batsman Ebadot Hossain could only survive eight deliveries before being trapped in front off a Blessing Muzarabani delivery as umpires signalled for Tea.
