Losing five wickets in the Powerplay cost us the game: Shanto

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto identified what had gone wrong in their six-wicket loss against India in a Group A Champions Trophy game at Dubai International Cricket Stadium today.

"Losing five wickets in the Powerplay cost us the game," Shanto said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Bangladesh found themselves in a spot of bother when they lost half of their side inside the first Powerplay, tottering at five for 35 after 8.3 overs. Only opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim was able to get to double figures, scoring a run-a-ball 25. Soumya Sarkar, Shanto, and Mushfiqur Rahim -- the three other top-order batters -- could only make 0,0 and 5, respectively.

However, Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali stitched a 154-run sixth-wicket stand -- the highest for the Tigers for any wicket against India in ODIs – to help the Tigers get past the 200-run mark.

"Impressive batting from Hridoy and Jaker against their spinners. I hope they will continue doing the same.

"Hridoy and Jaker batted brilliantly but we still made mistakes on the field. Dropped catches and a few runouts missed, the result could have been different," Shanto lauded the efforts from Jaker and Hridoy, who hit his maiden ODI century, while ruing the mistakes made while fielding.

Jaker dropped KL Rahul on nine off a Taskin Ahmed delivery in the 37th over at a time when India still needed 63 more runs to win.

Kl Rahul remained unbeaten on 41 off 47 deliveries to complement Shubman Gill's 101-run unbeaten knock and help India chase down the Tigers' 229-run target with 21 deliveries to spare.

Shanto also felt that taking wickets early in the innings could have changed the game's outcome.

"If we got wickets with the new ball it could have been different," he said.
