‘We played Sri Lanka, you were playing Hathurusingha’

Bangladesh clinched a memorable victory in their opening Asia Cup match in 2018 against Sri Lanka, thanks to an incredible 144 from Mushfiqur Rahim. Many perhaps do not know that the star batsman was playing with a broken rib throughout the tournament. During a talk with Tamim Iqbal in a social media hangout, Mushfiqur and Tamim reminisced on that game which also saw a tremendous act of bravery from the latter. Tamim went on to explain Mushfiqur determination to play on with injury from his own point of view during an interesting talk between friends.
Ongoing coronavirus pandemic has brought all sports to a halt and Tamim wanted to share some of the cricketers' personal experiences in order to cheer up audiences. Thus he arranged for a virtual meet with Mushfiqur.
"There is so much bad news going around due to the pandemic and I thought that we are cricketers but we are also entertainers. When we talk to the media, there are so many things we can't speak of like what goes on inside a dressing room. So I thought why not try and tell some of our stories to entertain people," Tamim began.
When the left-handed opener said that he will be asking a few questions, Mushfiqur lit up in an ear-to-ear smile, knowing that his teammate will pose questions meant to blow the lids on funny stories from the dressing room.
Mushfiqur replied: "I will try to answer questions but given that you are asking the questions, there is trouble (laughs)".
The two had a very enjoyable session and it certainly was entertaining to say the least. Mushfiqur asked what went on in Tamim's mind when he came out to bat at number 11 with a fractured little finger he suffered in the same Asia Cup match. Tamim said that it was a 'moment of madness' that led to him coming out to bat again and reminded Mushy of his own pain.
"When the report of the fracture [in the rib area] arrived the night before the match, I did not even think I would be able to play the match," Mushy remembered.
"During dinner, where Mashrafe [Bin Mortaza] bhai and [Mahmudullah] Riyad bhai were present, we chatted and I began to feel that no matter how much the pain is, I should try and play as we have to win the match.
"I went to the ground early as I usually do and checked if I could manage. It was the first match [of the tournament] and against Sri Lanka, so we had to win," he said.
Tamim started smiling at Mushfiqur's reply and said: "My friend, you are not saying the right thing. It's not because of Sri Lanka. Yes, Bangladesh were playing Sri Lanka, but you were playing Hathurusingha,".
Tamim then explained: "Actually it's not just you but all of us. I'm sure you are not saying things from a negative sense either. It's how he [Chandika] left and how we wanted to defeat him in a sporting sense and not from a sense of anger since Hathurusingha is there," Tamim said.
The Tigers had their most successful periods under any coach in international cricket during Hathurusingha's tenure. The players were determined to come out on top against someone who has trained them and knows them well 'inside-out.'
"It's in a sporting sense since he knew about all of us, about you too. We all wanted to defeat him. He was a very good coach for us," Tamim reminisced.
