All-rounder Mahedi Hasan smashed his career-best T20 score to help Gazi Group chase down a commendable total posted by Mohammedan Sporting Club and seal a three-wicket victory in the Super League stage of the ongoing Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division T20 League in Mirpur today.

Mohammedan's poor run of form continued as they suffered their fourth defeat in a row, failing to defend a competitive score of 165 for six. Mahedi's splendid 58-ball 92 helped Gazi ace the tricky run chase as they romped to victory with three balls to spare, but the 26-year-old would be disappointed to fall agonisingly short of his maiden T20 ton as he was trapped in front in the final over of the game.

Gazi had begun the chase positively with Soumya Sarkar leading the charge and Mahedi firm at the other end. Soumya, however, failed to convert his start to something meaningful, falling prey to Mohammedan skipper Shuvagata Hom in the sixth over following a 17-ball 22. 

Three wickets -- those of Shahadat Hossain, Mominul Haque and Gazi skipper Mahmudullah Riyad -- in space of just 27 runs had Gazi reeling at 71 for four after 10.4 overs. But even though wickets kept on falling at regular intervals, Mahedi kept Gazi's hopes alive. 

From playing cheeky scoops to putting the long handle of the bat to use, Mahedi played shots all around the park as he batted at a staggering strike rate of 158.62 and smashed a total of 11 fours and three sixes during his magnificent knock. 

His carnage only came to an end when Yeasin Arafath's delivery had struck him on the pads in the first ball of the final over and the umpire obliged with Mohammedan's loud appeal. However, by that time, the fate of the game was all but sealed with Akbar Ali hitting the winning runs with a four down the ground just a ball later. 

Earlier, electing to bat, Mohammedan skipper Shuvagata Hom's unbeaten 31-ball 59 and Parvez Hossain Emon's 41 at the top helped them pile up a decent score. Hom was also handy with the ball for Mohammedan, picking up two crucial wickets giving away just 29 runs in four overs.
