‘It’s his personal decision’

Mominul Haque will be relieved after registering the first away Test win under his captaincy, which also happened to be Bangladesh's first Test series win in Zimbabwe. The Tigers won by a commanding 220 runs after coming into the fifth and final day of the Harare Test yesterday.

Following an eventful yet interesting one-off Test match that made headlines for both on and off-the-field issues throughout the five days, the Tigers returned to winning ways in the longest format after four Tests and a year's gap. It was Bangladesh's fifth win in Tests away from home, two of which came in Zimbabwe.

Chasing a huge 477-run target, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 256. Taskin Ahmed ended with career-best figures of four for 82 and Mehedi Hasan Miraz picked up four wickets to follow up his fifer in the first innings as he finally made an impact with the ball away from home. The off-spinner's nine wickets came at the cost of just 148 runs, which are the best bowling figures by a Bangladeshi abroad.

The one-off Test match will also remain a special occasion for Mahmudullah Riyad, who struck a career-best unbeaten 150 in the first innings on his comeback to the Test side after 16 months. He also announced his desire to retire from Test cricket to the team management after the third day of the Test, which made headlines worldwide.

However, the experienced cricketer did not announce his retirement publicly after the game despite all eyes being on him when he came to accept the man of the match award. There was a surprising remark from Mominul when asked about his take on Mahmudullah's retirement from Test cricket.

"It's his personal decision and it's difficult to comment on this. I am not aware of it. It can be his personal decision," said Mominul.

Interestingly, the whole Bangladesh team even gave Mahmudullah a guard of honor before the start of the fifth and final day's play. When asked what the message behind that was, Mominul replied: "We actually wanted the game to end up that way (with a win) for him as well, so we tried our best to dedicate this Test match. I heard Bangladesh won on his debut Test and also in his last Test. Maybe, I don't know if it goes like this. I think this is the reason that helped to win the Test match," he said.

Mominul, who earlier said he was unaware of Mahmudullah's retirement, informed that he felt bad as a young captain and added that it would be unusual if he did not feel bad when an experienced player informed the team about his thoughts of retiring in the middle of a match.

This was Mominul's second win in eight Tests and his first away win since taking up the captaincy in 2019.

"I think this Test win will help all of us, boost our morale and build confidence because everyone will start to realise their roles. Obviously there is planning and improving," Mominul said.
