Zia charitable graft: HC accepts Khaleda’s appeal

The High Court (HC) today accepted BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's appeal challenging her conviction in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
The court also stayed a portion of the lower court verdict that fined Khaleda Tk 10 lakh in the graft case.
The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SK Kuddus Zaman asked the lower court officials concerned to submit records of the case within two months.
A Dhaka court on October 29 last year convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to seven years imprisonment in the corruption case.
The HC bench however refused to grant bail to the former prime minister in the case. It will consider the bail when it will hear the appeal after receiving the case records, the court said.
Advocate Zainul Abedin, lawyer of Khaleda, moved the appeal for its hearing before the court today.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station on August 8, 2011, accusing four people, including Khaleda, of abusing power to raise funds for the trust from unknown sources.
