Bangladesh wants India to address the concerns of the Bangladeshi people caused by India's "internal issues" and wants border killings brought down to zero, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said today.

The minister also told visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla that India has some "internal issues" that sometimes become matters of concern for Bangladeshis.

The foreign minister did not, however, specify what those issues were.

"I said we want you to not do anything that creates problems for us. He [Shringla] said the issues are temporary and won't create problems for us," Momen told reporters after a meeting with Shringla at the foreign ministry.

He added he expected "his guests to be aware of the expectations and concerns of our people."

Recent violence in Delhi over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) left 42 people dead and over 200 injured.

India maintains the CAA and the National Registrar of Citizenship (NRC) are internal issues of India and will not have any impact in Bangladesh.

On the matter of border killings, he said, "We had decided to bring the border killing to zero, but it increased in recent months. It is regrettable. Shringla said he would look into the matter."

According to data compiled by Ain O Salish Kendra, 43 Bangladeshis were killed by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in 2019, a threefold increase from 14 in 2018.

"I said you are our friends. Killing is not right. He [Shringla] said they will try their best to stop it," Momen said.
