NCC polls: Taimur to vie with BNP ticket despite unwillingness

BNP leader Taimur Alam Khandaker said he has been asked to be prepared for taking part in the upcoming polls of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) as the party nominated candidate.
“I told the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia that I am unwilling to contest the polls under the prevailing circumstances but respectful to the party decision in this regard,” Taimur told The Daily Star over phone this evening.
The NCC will go to election on December 22, according to the schedule announced by the Election Commission.
National standing committee, the highest policymaking body of BNP, gave the nod to Taimur in a meeting with Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office last night.
Citing several instances of irregularities in the local body elections, Taimur said no result will be brought taking part in the election under the prevailing situation.
“I have cleared my stance before my party Chairperson Khaleda Zia. And I have been asked to be prepared and wait for further instruction in this regard,” Taimur said.
Toimur quit the NCC election on October 30, 2011, in line with the directive of the party high command bringing an allegation of massive rigging.
