Jatiya Party (Ershad) candidate Shamim Hyder Patwari today won the by election of Gaibandha-1 (Sundarganj) constituency.

He secured 78, 926 votes while his nearest Awami League nominated contender Afroza Bari got 68, 913 votes, our correspondent reports, quoting the election officer Mahbubur Rahman.

There are 338,556 voters in the constituency. Around 44.46 percent of vote was cast, he added.

The seat of Gaibandha-1 constituency fell vacant after lawmaker Golam Mostafa Ahmed of Awami League died in a road accident on December 19 last year.

Four candidates -- Afroza Bari of ruling Awami League, Shamim Hyder Patwari of Jatiya Party (Ershad), Shariful Islam of Gano Front, and Zia Zaman Khan of National People's Party --took part in the by-polls.
