Omor Faruk Chy president, Asad gen secy of Rajshahi dist AL
Omor Faruk Chowdhury was made president and Asaduzzaman Asad general secretary of Rajshahi district unit of Awami League unanimously in the triennial council yesterday, following directives of the party high command.
Health Minister and AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim announced their names at the council held at Divisional Women Sports Complex in the city.
Earlier, the party bigwigs, who had campaigned for the two posts, proposed and supported the newly made leaders, said insiders.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, a president candidate, proposed the name of Omor Faruk, general secretary of the last committee, and lawmakers Akhtar Jahan and Enamul Haque, who were also supposed to contest, supported him.
Lawmaker Kazi Abdul Wadud Dara, a general secretary candidate, proposed the name of Asaduzzaman Asad, joint secretary of the last committee, and another possible contestant Ayen Uddin MP supported him.
AL general secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam gave a one-minute speech at the council and declined to talk to the press.
The council was held after a six-year delay. The last one took place in 2005.
