<i>Townspeople rise against drug menace</i>

A large number of townspeople including students here formed a human chain and held a rally yesterday demanding immediate steps to stop drug trade in the town including at Biswa Road intersection in front of Shah Neyamotullah College.
Locals of Swarupnagar organised the human chain and rally to create awareness against evils of drugs that threaten the young generation.
Speakers at the rally demanded immediate step to stop illegal drug trade at Swarupnagar and other points of the municipal area.
Ruhul Amin, chairman of Sadar upazila parishad, Anwarul Islam, principal of Shah Neyamotullah Collage, teacher Proshanto Kumar, students Sheikh Zaber, Abul Hasnat Sumon and Ramzan Ali Mamun addressed the rally.
People from different occupations and leaders and activists of political parties also joined the human chain.
They alleged that a few shops at Biswa Road intersection and Swarupnagar openly sell drugs ruining the young generation of the area. The drug includes liquor, hemp, heroin and phensdyl, they said.
Drug addicts gather at Shah Neyamotullah College in this area after dusk and during vacation. They said the local administration is yet to take any step against the illegal drug trade despite lodging several complaints.
Meanwhile, Sadar police arrested nine people including a woman on Tuesday night on charge of taking drug and drug peddling.
The arrestees are alleged drug trader Nanda Rani, 55, of Chanditala and addicts Shariful, 24, of Rehaichar Namopara, Sanaul 35 and Moinuddin 28 of Namo Rajarampur and Ariful alias Kalam, 28, Rashid, 30, Ashraful, 32, Anwar Hossain, 40 and Abdur Rahman, 28 of Hujrapur under Chapainawabganj municipality.
Sub-Inspector Rokonuzzaman of Sadar police station said, they arrested the nine from different places of the town during a drive on Tuesday night.
