Studying Nazrul

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Trishal, Mymensingh.

As part of their academic syllabus, students of all eight departments, under four faculties of the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) have to take the course 'Nazrul Studies'. This is a unique feature of the university's curriculum.
The course 'Nazrul Studies' highlights the life and selective masterpieces of Nazrul, along with the goals and ideals of JKKNIU. Ten poems including “Bidrohi,” “Shrishti Shukher Ullashey” and “Daridro”; ten songs; two dramas “Eid” and “Gulbagicha”; two translations “Rubaiyat-I-Omar Khaiyyam” and “Rubaiyat-I-Hafiz”; three essays “Jugabani,” Rajbondir Jaban Bondi and “Jadi Aar Banshi Na Bajey” of Nazrul with educational philosophy are compiled from his creations for the course.
Is this course enough to grasp the genius that was Nazrul?
“The genius of Nazrul is larger than life. The course is a precursor to the wonderful world of Nazrul. We want to work towards becoming a complete Nazrul research institute,” said Professor Shamsuddin Chowdhury, Dean, Faculty of Arts and the Chainman of the department of Bangla, JKKNIU.
Professor Shamsuddin Chowdhury, a Nazrul enthusiast and activist is also the Proctor of JKKNIU who leads all the cultural activities in the university.
“The people of Bangladesh have placed Nazrul in their hearts. No national days, festivals and events go without Nazrul. This university chalks out elaborate programmes marking the poet's birth and death anniversary,” he added.
Professor Ahmed Sharif once said, “Religion split the subcontinent, people demarcated their political boundary but no one could divide Nazrul.”
The magnanimity of Nazrul is in fact found in his words. We also expect the image of the university to be embellished with extensive research works on Nazrul's life and literature.
