In a major reshuffle, the government yesterday appointed chairmen and 12 directors to three state-owned banksSonali, Janata and Agrani.
Qazi Baharul Islam has been appointed chairman of Sonali Bank while Dhaka University (DU) academic Prof Abul Barakat chairman of Janata Bank.
Prof Khandaker Bazlul Haque, president of DU Teachers' association, was made chairman of Agrani Bank.
Each of these banks will now have 13 directors, including chairman and managing director, as a part of a plan under the Banking Companies Act.
This is the first major reshuffle in the sector after Awami League-led government assumed power in January this year. Soon the board of other state-owned and specialised banks will also witness reshuffle.
The finance ministry appointed Kashem Humayun, Lutfur Rahman Khan, Satyendra Chandra Bhakta, KM Zaman Romel and Saimum Sarwar Kamol as directors to Sonali Bank.
Shekhar Datta, Nagibul Islam Dipu, Abdus Sabur, Mohammad Zakir Ahmed and Shahjada Mohiuddin have been made directors of Agrani Bank while Nazibar Rahman and Balaram Poddar directors of Janata Bank.
The ministry yesterday issued a circular on the appointments.
Sources said some of the appointees are former leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
