MINU HAQUE

Minu Haque was born in a family who encouraged cultural sensitization; she grew up with seven other siblings who were into some sort of art or the other, whether it is playing an instrument like the tabla or singing Rabindra Sangeet or Nazrul Geeti. She had 5 brothers and 3 sisters while growing up. During the liberation war she also served as a nurse. Later in 1977, she finished her Masters on Psychology from the University of Dhaka. She continued her dancing and now currently associated with the Bangladesh Dance Artist Association. In 1997, she founded the Pallavi Dance Center of which she acts as a director.
Inspiration
My biggest inspirations are my parents. When I was a little kid my parents used to ask me every evening about what I learned about dancing and I use to show them my new moves. After I got married my husband, Shahudul Haque, was very supportive and you can say that he has also been an inspiration. My children are also a source of inspiration to me, which I am very proud to say. I feel blessed for having such wonderful people throughout my life. In recent years I have been inspired by Akram Khan's dancing. When I see him dance, I just feel like becoming younger and start dancing again!
Philosophy
I think that one should make the best of what they receive and one must not waste what they have. They should make the best out of what they have. To me God is everywhere and one should respect others' religious view. To me honesty is the best policy in life, I think if you are honest than, you will get something in return! One should have self-respect in order to get respect from others and I think people should be more worried about their current lives instead of worrying about the afterlife. My thoughts are inspired by Rabindranath Tagore but I am a Muslim in my heart and I respect my religion along with other religions. It is very important for one to respect other people's religious views. On the other hand I would like to point out that the world is black and white and everyone should take some actions on their own in order to make the world a better place. Yes the world will always have some conflicts; it's a never ending battle, as I said - the world is black and white. But we should make the best of our own situation. I would also like to point out that there are not many people in our society who loves our country. This should change.

Dancing
During my days there were not many television channels like you see nowadays. There was only one channel, in black and white. Television was only introduced in 1964. Back then, there were no professional dancers. In my younger days I used to dance at school programs. I got into dancing because my parents appreciated arts and culture. I stared dancing at the age of 5; my teacher was a very renowned dancer back in the days, known as Dulal Talukder. He used to be our neighbor and most importantly he was a family friend. Later I joined Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts (BAFA) in 1967; where I was lucky to have mentors like Habibul Chowdhury.
