Five people, including two children, suffered severe burns following a gas cylinder explosion at a residence in the Mogorkhal area under the jurisdiction of Basan Police Station in Gazipur last night.

The victims have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment.

The injured are Parvin, 35, Taslima, 30, Sima, 30, Tanzila, 10, and Aiyan, 1.5.

The incident occurred around 7:00pm while Parvin was cooking. The explosion was triggered by a gas leakage, according to neighbours.

A witness and neighbour Roman said, "Parvin was cooking when the cylinder started leaking gas, leading to the sudden explosion. All five were injured and initially taken to Gazipur Sadar Hospital. Later, they were transferred to the burn institute in Dhaka for advanced care."

Dr Md Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the institute's emergency department, said, "We are providing emergency treatment. Details regarding the severity of their burns will be known shortly."

Locals who brought them to the hospital said Taslima and Sima are garment workers. Two families share a kitchen in the house. The two came to the kitchen to cook alongside Parvin when the incident took place.
