Setting 270-300-run target will be ideal: Mominul

Bangladesh batter Mominul Haque said the Tigers are aiming for a 300-run target, though they would settle for a slightly lower total after bad light brought an early end to Day 3 of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Sylhet on Tuesday.

With the match finely poised, Bangladesh reached 194 for 4 at the close of play, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto unbeaten on 60 and Jaker Ali not out on 21.

"If it [the target] is 300, then good; If not, then 270 or 280 but 300 will take us to a good position," Mominul told reporters in Sylhet.

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, will be eyeing to capitalise on the assistance for the bowlers offered in the morning session to get early wickets on Day 4, especially one of the two overnight batters, to expose Bangladesh's lower-middle order which folded cheaply in the first innings. Mominul, however, remained optimistic about the batters coming in after the set duo.

"We are confident about reaching that target because after Shanto, Jaker, and Miraz [Mehedi Hasan], we have Taijul [Islam] and Hasan [Mahmud], who can also contribute with the bat. That gives us added confidence," he said.

Mominul came into the match with an impressive record against Zimbabwe, averaging 57.33 -- his second-best average against any Test opposition. He scored 56 in the first innings but missed out on another fifty in the second by just three runs. On both occasions, he failed to convert promising starts into substantial scores which could've taken Bangladesh to strong positions.

Converting into three figures has been a struggle for the 33-year-old as he managed to reach three figures only twice in his last 26 innings, with the latest one coming 11 innings ago -- an unbeaten 107 against India in Kanpur. The left-hander, however, has six half-centuries during this period.

"When I play Test cricket, I don't focus on centuries; I focus on batting through three, four, or five sessions," Mominul explained. "In both innings, I managed just one session and then got out after getting set. That's not acceptable from me as a senior player.

"If I had batted three more sessions, we could have been in better positions in both innings," he added.
